Ingredients
- 6applesmedium, about 1.2 kg, a mix of tart and sweet (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp)
- 1 tbsplemon juice
- 50 ggranulated sugar¼ cup
- 1.5 tspground cinnamon
- 95 gall-purpose flour¾ cup: 1 tbsp for the apples, the rest for the topping
- 90 grolled oats1 cup, old-fashioned
- 150 glight brown sugar¾ cup, packed
- 0.25 tspfine salt
- 115 gunsalted butter½ cup, melted
- 1 cupvanilla ice cream (optional)for serving
Steps
- 1

Prep: peel and core the 6 apples, then cut them into slices about ¼ inch thick.
- 2

Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and butter a 9-inch square baking dish or a 2-quart casserole.
- 3

Toss the sliced apples in a big bowl with the lemon juice, granulated sugar and 1 tsp of the cinnamon. Taste a slice: if your apples are very tart, add another tablespoon of sugar. Then toss in 1 tbsp flour and spread the apples in the dish.
- 4

In the same bowl, stir the oats, the rest of the flour, the brown sugar, the remaining ½ tsp cinnamon and the salt. Pour in the melted butter and mix with a fork until it forms clumpy crumbs.
- 5

Scatter the crumbs evenly over the apples. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the topping is deep golden and the juices are bubbling thickly around the edges, and a knife slides easily into the apples.
⏱ 45 min💡 Set the dish on a baking sheet to catch drips.
- 6

Let it cool for at least 10 minutes so the juices thicken. Serve warm, with ice cream if you like.
